Injury Prevention For Athletes and Weekend Warriors
My background in sports rehabilitation and kinesiology as well as the many years I’ve spent training and studying the martial arts gives me a unique perspective on the subject of injury prevention and injury recover. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just a weekend warrior you’re probably well aware of the occasional bumps and bruises and mild wear and tear on your body when it comes participating in your activity of interest. Some very general principles to be aware of especially if you’re just beginning your training are: 1. Go slowly and step by step when you’re learning a technique. If you’re starting a new program or new type of activity, it’s extremely important to take your time and learn proper technique or motion. Poor technique lends itself to inefficient motion and that’s when injuries occur! 2. Focus on your form and technique. If there’s one thing to emphasize it’s proper form and technique as mentioned above. Whether it’s proper form while swimming, proper motion while pedaling on a bike or swinging a golf club or whatever your chosen activity; take the time to learn things properly and to allow your body to become accustomed to different motion. 3. Be COACHABLE! This may not apply to every athlete; particularly weekend warriors. But, it helps to get a second opinion to make sure you’re moving as efficiently as you possibly can. 4. Don’t over do it! This goes back to proper form and technique. If you’re not doing a technique correctly and you’re doing it faster or more agressively just for the sake of going faster and more agressively, you stand a much higher chance of hurting yourself!! 5. Pay attention to your body! If you’re very fatigued and tired, consider taking a break or slowing down for a time. 6. Do some supplemental exercises. Stretching, calisthenic, core stability and body weight conditioning exercises are all things you can do outside of your chosen activity that (1) Can be done at home and (2) Don’t require a lot of equipment and (3) Yield great results in terms of overall body awareness and conditioning. 7. If you are injured get EVALUATED ASAP! The last thing you want is to just ignore something and hope it goes away!! Make sure it’s nothing serious by getting it evaluated by a professional as soon as you can. 8. ICE, HEAT, EPSOM SALTS ? Are easy, accessible and simple things you can apply to take care of those aches, pains, bumps and bruises. I hope this gives you an idea of what you can do to prevent injuries from happening. To fully enjoy your chosen activities you need to stay injury free as much as possible. I hope these 8 tips will help you have more fun and keep you injury free!
